In many industrial applications, wear and corrosion occur simultaneously, resulting in material degradation that is significantly more severe than either mechanism alone. This combined phenomenon, known as tribocorrosion, affects the performance and lifetime of biomedical implants, marine components, aerospace systems, automotive parts, energy equipment, and protective coatings exposed to corrosive environments and mechanical contact. Understanding the interaction between friction, wear, lubrication, and electrochemical corrosion is essential for selecting materials, developing advanced coatings, and improving long-term component reliability.
The Rtec-Instruments MFT-5000 Tribocorrosion System combines advanced tribological testing with electrochemical measurements to evaluate material performance under realistic service conditions. Compatible with potentiostats and supporting a wide range of ASTM, ISO, and customized test methods, the system simultaneously measures friction, wear, corrosion potential, corrosion current, and electrochemical behavior while testing in corrosive media such as saline solutions, acids, alkaline solutions, or simulated body fluids. Its modular design enables reciprocating, rotary, scratch, fretting, and rolling contact tests, making the MFT-5000 a powerful platform for tribocorrosion research, coating development, material qualification, failure analysis, and quality control.
