The Rtec Instruments Traction Machine is a next-generation tribological testing platform. It evaluates the rheological and friction properties of lubricants under controlled rolling-sliding contact conditions. Two rotating surfaces — typically ball-on-disc — are brought into contact under a controlled normal load. They are furthermore driven at increasing sliding-to-rolling ratios (SRR), enabling precise measurement of traction coefficient, Stribeck curve analysis, lubricant film thickness, tribofilm structure, and pressure-viscosity coefficient across a wide range of operating conditions.
Two independently controlled closed-loop high-power servo drives enable synchronous and asynchronous surface motion. As a result, they deliver a wide and precise sliding-to-rolling ratio for any application-specific traction test. Normal forces of up to 100, 200, or 3,000 N are additionally available depending on the model selected. Multiple environmental chambers furthermore extend testing from cryogenic temperatures to 180°C. This consequently enables realistic simulation of automotive, aerospace, and industrial lubricant operating conditions. The Traction Machine is therefore the ideal solution for lubricant formulation research, additive performance screening, EHD film thickness measurement, and Stribeck curve analysis in modern tribology laboratories.
