Materials Testing 

The Multi Function Tribometer is also used to characterize wear, friction, life, hardness of materials or components with ease. The tests can be performed in controlled environmental conditions (humidity, liquids, temperature) from loads mN to 10,000N.

Various modules allow to do wear, friction test in any motion rotary, linear or axial rotation with ease.

Wear, Friction, Fretting, roughness change vs test time 

Inline 3d profilometer (white light interferometer, confocal microscope) allows to measure roughness at the test location before the test and record change in wear, surface, roughness with time automatically. Following image shows sample surface change vs test time.


Scratch Hardness, Resistance

Scratch hardness is the ability of a material to resist plastic deformation, usually by scratches and abrasion. The scratch module allows to measure scratch hardness and resistance of bulk material. For coating scratch hardness and adhesion please read the coating section. The test requires moving a sharp tip at constant load on the surface that needs to be characterized and on the standard sample with known hardness. During the test several parameters such as Friction (fx), Down force (Fz), Coefficient of friction (COF), displacement (Z), Acoustic emission (AE) etc. are measured insitu. As per ASTM standards G171-03 Hardness of coating is determined by calculating the ratio of width of scratch track between the sample and standard sample. The sample automatically moves under imaging technique of choice (WLI, AFM, microscope) and creates a complete 3D image by stitching across entire track. The width of the track is calculated from this image.

Inline Imaging 

The sample automatically moves under optical profilometer and creates a 3D stitched image. The optical profilometer is specifically optimized for scratch test. The head allows to measure steep scratch slopes, transparent coatings (glass etc) and measure roughness, volume wear, method of failure etc. with sub nm resolution.


Micro Hardness, Hot Hardness

The micro hardness module allows to measure traditional hardness (rockwell, vicker, brinell etc.) with ease. The hardness information obtained may correlate to tensile strength, wear resistance, ductility, and other physical characteristics of metallic materials, and may be useful in quality control and selection of materials.

The tests can be done in room temperature or at high temperature (hot hardness) upto 1000C. 


3,4 point bending

3, 4 point bending tests to measure mechanical strength of beams and materials can be done with ease. The wide range of fixture allows a variety of flexural and fracture toughness bond tests. The data obtained can be used to determine flexural modulus, flexural strength and flexural yield strength of tested samples. The tester can apply upto 10,000N force. 

Fatigue, Tensile, Compression, Torsion 

Independently programmable XYZ and Theta axis allows to create custom motions to test sample failures under load. Various adapters are available to mount several kind of shape and sizes. Sturdy frame and wide load range allows the multi function tester to run fatigue, tensile, compression, torsion etc. test with ease. The tester comes with both standard servo controlled motor or electromagnetic voice coils to do the tests. Fatigue is the weakening of a material caused by repeatedly applied loads. Tensile test requires subjecting a sample to a controlled tension until failure occurs.Torsion test requires twisting of an object due to an applied torque. 

Tapping, Cutting, Drilling

Tester can do tapping, cutting, drilling. Using close loop xy stage tester becomes a mini CNC simulator that can be used to simulate cutting, drilling operations
